The earliest Lost Worlds in the Fading Suns universe: t

Postby newmarduk » Tue Jun 28, 2005 7:25 pm

During the 1st Republic, (2100-2600), sublight ships carrying hundreds of thousands of individals in cryosleep were sent on slow voyages to extrasolar planets (outside Earth's solar system) to colonize new worlds. These worlds almost invariably orbited the twins suns of Alpha Centauri A & B, 4.3 light years from Earth. The ships, equipped with primitive fusion engines propelling the sublight sleeper ships to about 0.5 percent the speed of light, were obviously converted, hollowed-out, self-propelled asteroids. Most of the passengers were political dissidents who annoyed the 1st Republic's government and corporations too much, and they were exiled from Earth and it's solar system under pain of death. All of the sleeper ships launched, I think, were launched in the mid-to-late 23rd Century (2250-2300). The sleeper ship program was abandoned after the discovery of the Annunaki jumpgates in 2305 and later.
The ships would have taken 860 years to reach the Alpha Centauri system, and all the people (mainly exiles) would have arrived at the two Earth-like planets, Gaia and Terra Secundus, in the period between 3110 and 3160.
During the time of the Diaspora (2600-3500), 2nd Republic (3500-4000), New Dark Ages (4000-4995), and the Phoenix Empire (4995-present), the people in the Known Worlds, taught by the Universal Church, would have assumed the interstellar colonists aboard the sleeper ships were lost to demons in interstellar space. But they weren't.
After the initial colonization period (3110-3160), the colonists and their descendants went into technological decline. By the year 3400, the descendants of the original colonists of Gaia and Terra Secundus would be living in communities with a technology no higher than medieval Europe on old Earth. Of course, knowledge about the original human homeworld would degenerate into legends and myths.
During the Known Worlds' New Dark Ages (4000-4995), when the Known Worlders more or less lost much of the high tech of the 2nd Republic, the people of the Alpha Centauri planets were slowly but steadily gaining in science and technology. By the year 4500 A.D., Gaia and Terra Secundus had electricity, radio and TV communications, computers, aircraft, world governments, and the beginnings of space flight. The inhabitants of the two worlds recontacted each other in a few decades.
In 4567, an Annunaki jumpgate was discovered at the very edge of the Alpha Centauri system, and by 4600 contact was made with planets formerly of the now-extinct 2nd Republic, but none of the Known Worlds themselves.
As of 5000, the remote descendants of the ancient 1st Republic sleeper ships had made contact with the following inhabited planets that are a mere single jump from the Alpha Centauri jumpgate:
SETI: a planet ruled by House Alecto, a noble family extinct in the Known Worlds. Seti was cut off from the Known Worlds in the 4550s decade.
IRANISTAN: a planet ruled by a branch of House al-Malik, and like Seti was cut off from the Known worlds in the 4550s decade in the chaos following Emperor Vladimir Alecto's death.
EMPYREAN'S DELIGHT: this is under the theocratic rule of the local offshoot of the Universal Church of the Celestial Sun, the Order of the Pancreator's Divine Fire.
There are also other planets ruled by the Seti Alectos and Iranistani al-Malik that border each other but don't connect directly to the Alpha Centauri system. The guilds of the local version of the Merchant League have developed the collective title of the League of the Syndicates, while the Order of the Pancreator's Divine Fire is the dominant faith on the planets of the local Alectos and al-Malik, and are making some inroads on Gaia and Terra Secundus.
The Seti Alectos and Iranistani al-Malik are often fierce political rivals, and sometimes war with each other. The democratically-elected governments of Gaia and Terra Secundus try to play off the two Royal Houses against each other.

It's not part of the FS canon, but an attempt to provide an explanation for the fate of the people aboard the 1st republic sleeper ships mentioned in the canonical FS history mentioned in all the Fading Sund rulebooks-1st and 2nd editions and the d20 edition.
