Random Galaxy Files: Planets

Postby Grimly » Fri Dec 21, 2007 5:37 am

Is anybody else working on the PLANETS.TXT file?

I've only spent a few days on it, but I've had some pretty interesting results. Some changes:

(1) expansion from 20 to the max of 99 lines of "code"

(2) reintroduction of the Megacity

(3) I tried to apply some basic hydrology to the way the file treats land mass vs ice, dry vs wet, hot vs cold

(4) The main types have 2 series each for a little variability in terrain. Thus, there are 2 lines for a Tundra planet with 50% land/water; one has forest covering the tundra, and the other has trees only in grassy areas. Similarly, there is a desert-tree series and a no-tree series

Anybody interested?

EDIT TO POST:

I should probably clarify something I wrote above. Whereas standard EFS uses 6 planet types and 20 "templates," of which there are really only 10 since the rest are copies, to create a random galaxy, my hack uses 7 planet types and 99 different templates. So this expands by a factor of 10 the variability you'll find in a random galaxy.

I'm interested in seeing what you've done. I don't have much experience with altering the Planets file but I wouldn't mind checking out your results.

Also, is there a way to increase or decrease the amount of planets generated?
...end of line.

So much for getting an alert when someone replies!

I doubt it very much---and if there is, it isn't controlled by these files.

Let me know how I can get the edited files to you.
