Update (though probably not helpful if it's just some hardware clash), tried to work it again, and it didn't crash after doing the research screen. Instead it crashed as soon as I tried to view a planet map. Oddly enough, when trying to use the map editor, it only crashed when trying to view a planet.

Out of curiosity, how much food do cities / units consume? Is it different for any of the mods compared to normal efs?

The stripped version (from hotu) can be unzipped, then I double click on the registry thingo and then efs.exe will 'work'. Of course it crashes the first turn of any game after the research screen (which is at the start of the turn).

What's the method for checking if this is the case and how to correct it if so?

Old ini files? Well I have uninstalled, reinstalled, manually deleted etc many times over. I've got up to date drivers for my computer so I'm not sure why there'd be a problem if it was the drivers.
