Russel: you should check out the subversion patch Tibeius is working on. He's got some radical ideas and the church/league/symbiots will become forces to recon with throughout the game. Perhaps you could get some inspiration for your own patch.

about the research points.. The upkeep of your techs is substracted from the output of the labs. So if you have 100 points upkeep and 4 labs, each lab will have 75 points left for new reseach. Units outside cities will heal at 2%/turn, inside cities they heal at 12%. Dunno about the hospitals though...

There is a trait where loyalty is increased when a noble is present in the palace. (Not sure if this one was broken) That is the only case where you'd need nobles in all your palaces. the biggest advantage of a ministry is that u can use 2 space stacks to attack or defend. 40 unitslots instead of 20... makes some difference to say the least. assault guns work well to. Anything with a low close attack damage will do. So, yes, you just have to hope they'll survive.

In my games my elite fighters get hit by ranged space attacks. U could easily test this with mapedit, set up a few elite fighters and a few green dreadnoughts and watch the fireworks.

Yes, as much as possible. Sometimes the coast won't allow it though or resource markers come out 'wrong'. Like a mine having both metal and exotica. Then I improvise.

I've been having a lot of luck capturing nobles lately. In my mp game I'm now up to 8 nobles. I've captured these with assault guns (nova patch), these have got a lousy close attack and will only damage the noble 9 out of 10 times. Dont use too many units.
